Julia Fiona Roberts was born in Atlanta on October 28, 1967 to Betty Lou Bredemus and Walter Grady Roberts. She is the fourth Roberts generation that has lived in Atlanta, beginning with her great-grandfather who was a farmer John Pendleton Roberts. Her father was a theatre enthusiast from a very young time. As a student in Emory University he appeared in diverse productions, both on and off campus. He joined the Air Force in 1953 and, while stationed in Biloxi Mississippi was cast in the military's production, which featured Betty Lou Bredemus who was as well in Air Force. In 1955, the couple got married and, in 1956, their child Eric Anthony was born. Walter attended Tulane University New Orleans Louisiana after leaving the Airforce in 1957. Walter worked with Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio. In 1960, the couple relocated to Decatur Georgia. Walter and Betty Lou produced a Saturday morning show on local television for children known as Bum Bum and His Buddies in 1964, a project they self-financed. The Actors and Writers Workshop was founded in 1964 and ran for six years. Lelisa Billingsley, also known as Lisa was born in 1965. Julia Billingsley followed in 1967.
