Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic is also a popular public speaking event organizer. She was the creator of Feminist Frequency a website that hosts videos and commentary analyzing the representation of women in pop media. Anita Sarkeesian was a Canadian and American feminist media critique. Feminist Frequency is an educational non-profit website that investigates representations of women in the popular media narratives. As well as working to bring awareness to the harassment and targeted attack on women and as well as other minorities, she is committed to breaking down stereotypes that are prevalent in popular culture. Sarkeesian has a Master's degree in social and political thinking from York University. As a public speaker, she's highly sought after and has given talks at TEDxWomenXOXO and the United Nations Broadband Working Group. She was fascinated by feminist issues, gender and gender equality from a very early time. In 2009, when she was in university she started the Feminist Frequency website. The site was created by a woman in her early 20s who wanted to create the series of videos on the internet which would explore how gender is represented in video games. But, she was the victim of online harassment. However the attack could be a deterrent, but it only strengthened her resolve as a feminist critic of media. In recognition of the many achievements she's made for feminist movements, she has been awarded numerous prizes. Anita Sarkeesian was a multi-award winning media journalist. She is also the director and founder of Feminist Frequency a nonprofit educational organisation that studies pop culture representations of females.
