
Hanks was seen with Ron Howard in his next character, which was as Commander and Astronaut Jim Lovell in Apollo 13 (1995). Film critics generally praised the film as well as the performances of the entire ensemble, that included actors Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise, Ed Harris and Kathleen Quinlan. The film received nominations for the Academy Awards nine times and won two. Hanks was later seen as Sheriff Woody in Disney/Pixar's computer-animated animated film Toy Story (1995). In the following year when he directed his debut in the musical comedy That Thing You Do! (1996) that chronicles the rise and fall of a 1960s music group. He also took on the role of a producer. The Time magazine's Richard Schickel called it "charming" and many critics agree that Hanks' performances earned him a place in the top romantic comedy stars of the current generation.
